The increasing government support toward the adoption of autonomous vehicles is one of the major factors strengthening the German autonomous vehicles sector. Germany is the first nation in the world to approve semi and fully autonomous driving systems. In 2016, the government unveiled its plan to develop autonomous driving infrastructure in the nation. Furthermore, in 2017, an amendment was done in the German Road Traffic Act, permitting a driver to pass control to an autonomous vehicle.

Presently, major original equipment manufacturers and technology providers are focusing on level 4 and level 5 autonomous vehicles, and they have the approval to test driverless automobiles on public roads. In March 2018, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and Charite–Universitatsmedizin Berlin, in partnership with EasyMile SAS and Navya SAS, introduced a pilot project to test autonomous shuttles on the Charite campus, in Berlin. Thus, the surging government aid and pilot projects are propelling the sector ahead.
